Many people have a great deal of curiosity about the sea and all of the living and non-living creatures and plants that lie beneath the surface of the water. These curiosities are brought to the forefront for many people when they travel to tropical locations where scuba diving and snorkeling are offered by resorts and assorted tour groups trading along the shore. The question for many people on vacation becomes, can I scuba dive even without any experience?
The answer to this question is not a simple, yes. If you and those you are traveling with, or even if you are at local diving site close to your home, want to go diving there is always some training involved before you go diving for the first time. One thing to consider before doing water sport is how comfortable you actually feel in the water. Being comfortable in the water includes being a strong and confident swimmer, having good breathing practices when swimming, and feeling comfortable while wearing all of the required scuba gear – some of which can be fairly heavy.
Swimming, Snorkeling, and Scuba Experience
If you want to go diving here are a few things to do before considering taking part in your first dive. Before you go on a tropical vacation where you plan to try this sport for the first time, make sure that you know how to swim. Get in plenty of swimming practice in a pool and if possible at local beaches – swimming in a current is much different than in a still pool. Practice holding your breath as well, as breathing is one of the essential factors in safe diving. Confident swimmers can get a taste of what scuba diving is like by spending some time snorkeling at local beaches. Snorkeling is a good way to get used to wearing an apparatus in your mouth for breathing as well as the goggles and swim fins.
With a strong swimming background and some preparatory snorkeling experience, you can book yourself an instruction course at the resort you are staying at or other diving company. The courses will give you some basic information and safety instruction so that you can go scuba diving, to predetermined depths, despite never having any prior experience. These courses are not a replacement for a complete certification course, but they do provide those individuals without any experience the chance to go scuba diving when on holiday.
